MFW ECC Weeks 16 - 17: Germany

Just a head's up on week 17's modeling Beeswax project.   Just in case your in a hurry, like I usually am when shopping, make sure you pick up modeling Beeswax.   We ended up with Beeswax, it's not nearly as mold-able.   We melted it in the oven and poured it into a cookie cutter.  The girls made cute candles and the house smelled like honey.   So not a bad modification, but I think the girls were looking forward to the modeling project.

Animals that cannot hear feel the sound vibrations more strongly than the ones that hear.  They feel the sound vibrations on the ground. We poured salt on a pan and watched it dance to the sound vibrations.

I tricked the girls.  I asked them if paper clips sink or float.  When they said sink, I showed them my "floating" paper clip.   :) This took a couple of tries for the girls. It seemed to work better if the paper clips were dry.   It's important to remind students that the paper clip isn't floating, it's being held up by surface tension.

We finished our European study with the sound of music.  I was amazed at how much my girls enjoyed it. We had so much fun singing along:)

      • Lakes are large bodies of fresh water, while a pond is a lake that isn't deep enough to have a midnight zone.
      • Cold water sinks, but ice floats.  If ice didn't float, lakes would freeze at the bottom first, killing all the fish.
      • Overturn - As ice melts, the cold water rushes to the bottom of the lake, causing the warm water to rise.
      • A river is a moving body of freshwater.
      • Fresh water freezes quicker than salt water.
      • A tributary a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river.

        • "Courage sometimes means risking your own safety to do what is right."
        • "Joy is to be found when you don't take life or yourself too seriously."
        • "Boldness is the confidence to speak out for God, even when others do not want you to.
        • "Generosity in giving to others is simply giving back to God what belongs to Him in the first place.

The grammar and sentence constructions become progressively difficult as you go along. It keeps reviewing previously learned words, allowing you to progress from basic words all the way through various verb tenses and abstract ideas.
      • We love that we can compare progress with our friends through Facebook
