MFW ECC Weeks 12 & 13 - Norway

As soon as Katelyn saw the girl on the Norway John 3:16 paper, 

she begged me to change her hair to match it!

Norwegian Potato Soup

4 medium potatoes,  1 onion (chopped),  1/2 tsp salt,  2 cups whole milk,
2 tablespoons butter,  1/2 tsp chopped fresh parsley,  1/8 tsp pepper

1. Peel potatoes & cut into 4-6 pieces.
2. Chop onion well.
3. Put potatoes, onion, and salt in heavy saucepan. Pour water into pan covering vegetables.
4. Boil about 15 to 20 minutes, until potatoes mash easily. Don’t drain.
5. Mash potatoes and onion, then add milk slowly, stirring all the time.
6. Allow soup to simmer while you add butter, parsley and pepper.  Stir until smooth.

The Lapps are the only indigenous people living in the northern parts of Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia. Some are still nomadic and spend a good portion of the year follow the migration of the reindeer near the Arctic Circle, and area called Lapland. Lapps wear bright blue clothing bordered with brilliant red and yellow felt bands (Global Art). Here are the girls' Lapland Felt Squares Norwegian art projects. They used felt for the background and some of the decor. They also cut out embroidered designs from outgrown clothing that couldn't be resold!!!

Ok, we cheated and used a stencil, but the girls had fun. They are using
their chest to store all the small swap projects we've done this year.

• Northern Evergreen Forests consist of trees that contain green foliage year round. 
• Conifer needles rot slowly causing evergreen forests to have poorer soil than deciduous forests.  
• Hibernation is when an animal goes into a deep sleep in the winter.
• Migration is when animals move from one place to another and then return.
• Migration is most likely triggered by changes in the length of days.
• Book of Animals: Farm Animals(duck, pig, horse, cow, chicken, sheep, goat)

• Duolingo is a fun, free, & fantastic learning tool. 
• Much of the learning happens in the form of quizzes, which switch between testing speaking, listening, and writing. The grammar and sentence constructions become progressively difficult as you go along. It keeps reviewing previously learned words, allowing you to progress from basic words all the way through various verb tenses and abstract ideas.

Heidi took place in Switzerland, but both Norway & Switzerland are European mountainous countries:) It might be a stretch, but we really enjoyed the movie.
