Our journey down under was quite the adventure. With its vast outback, pristine marine environments & unique wildlife, Australia offers many amazing lessons.
What We Learned:
- Geography
- The capital of Australia is Canberra.
- The official language is English.
- The Australian Dollar is the currency of Australia. (print Australian Dollar here)
- The National Anthem is "Advance Australia Fair"
- Download Australian lapbook here
- Exploring World Geography: Rivers, Bays, & Harbors(56) Bodies of Water(59)
- Science
- Coral reefs are found in the ocean near the equator. They are made from limestone from the exoskeletons of coral.
- Coral are found in upper layer of the ocean because they need sunlight for photosynthesis.
- The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef structure. It spreads across 1300 miles.
NOTE: There is a reference to an older earth. - Animal Characteristic game - We grouped the animals for our lapbooks by characteristics or animal types (marsupials, birds, predators, prey, mammals, etc).
- Book of Animals - Australian pages: Dingo, Dugong, Echidna, Kangaroo, Koala, Kookaburra, Platypus, Tasmanian Devil, Wallaby, Wombat
We watched the following over lunch.
- Memory Verse: Matthew 25:34 - 36 & Matthew 25:40
- Read Matthew chapters 26:17 - 27:26
- Papua New Guinea & New Zealand - Window on the World
- Kingdom Tales
- Aborigines Dot Painting
My first grader used this Koala coloring template - Koala Treats Global Art
- Kangaroo with pouch template (download here)
- Kookaburra - Australian Song
- Waltzing Matilda
- We use Duolingo.com
- Duolingo is a fun, free, & fantastic learning tool.
- Much of the learning happens in the form of quizzes, which switch between testing speaking, listening, and writing. The grammar and sentence constructions become progressively difficult as you go along. It keeps reviewing previously learned words, allowing you to progress from basic words all the way through various verb tenses and abstract ideas.
- We love that we can compare progress with our friends.
