MFW ECC Weeks 33-34 Antarctica

 Brrr! Due to the extreme cold temperatures we decided to build a shelter - our own igloo. We finished just in time - right before the snow storm. We heard strange noises & went outside to explore.  We were hoping to find a polar bear, but unfortunately there are no polar bears here.  On our exploration we discovered an adorable lost penguin.

What We Learned:

• Geography   
• No one owns Antarctica, it is a international territory. 
• There is no official language, currency, flag or national anthem. 
• We designed our own flag

• Science
•  90% of Icebergs floats below the surface.
  
  
  We used a gallon zip lock bag to create our "glacier."
  Then we watched our iceberg float across the "ocean".
  
•  Glaciers shaped our earth.
• Another Glacier Experiment - Glaciers Shaping our earth.
  
  Once again we created a glacier using a gallon sized bag. 
  We added sand, rocks, and shells to the mix.  This glacier
  appeared dirtier than the one we floated in the bathtub.
  
  
  
   After our glacier melted, our mountain changed shapes.
  The center was shaped like a valley with a slight path down
  the side.  All of the sand, shells, and rocks were left
  behind, creating an interesting debris field. 
  
• Polar Seasons, periods of constant daylight or darkness, are caused by the tilt of the earth.

• We use Duolingo.com  
• Duolingo is a fun, free, & fantastic learning tool. 
• Much of the learning happens in the form of quizzes, which switch between testing speaking, listening, and writing. The grammar and sentence constructions become progressively difficult as you go along. It keeps reviewing previously learned words, allowing you to progress from basic words all the way through various verb tenses and abstract ideas. 
• We love that we can compare progress with our friends.
