MFW CTG Week 5

We had unexpected company, a trip to the water park, and a new little distraction running around that seems to be slowing us down and stretching this week into 2 calendar weeks :)

What We Learned:

Bible

• Memory Verse: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 & reviewed Books of the Old Testament 
• Biblical Worldview - We tried on different types of sunglasses and discussed how it changed our perception of the world around us.   We looked at optical illusions and were shocked at how we saw things differently.   We even made our own fish optical illusion. Our different beliefs influence our choices and actions.  Some beliefs cause people to have  blurry view of the world, missing the beauty and truth that is revealed in His word.

History Notebook

• Mummies - Egyptians tried to prevent bodies from decaying.

• Pyramids - Pyramids are the largest stone buildings ever made by man.  The main purpose  of the pyramid was to preserve and prepare the pharaoh for the next world.

   This week we omitted the history writing lesson but played games using
  5 sense words and alliterations.
    Our longest alliteration:
  Hairy Henry has hidden Hawaiian hats, however he has helped hungry hippos hula-hoop.

Timeline

• Egyptian Pyramids 2500 BC
• The Minoans C. 2000 BC - was located on the island of Crete, which is now a part of Greece. The Minoans flourished during the middle Bronze age and were known for the building magnificent palaces. 
  

Science

• Pyramids & Mummy Preservation - The Egyptians believed that the body was needed in the afterlife so they preserved or mummified the bodies.  They wanted to prevent decaying or bacteria from causing mold.  To examine the effects of decay we buried several items.
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  After 10 days the girls we dug up our items.  We discovered that the stone and plastic were not harmed.  The wood appeared about the same, but  wood takes months to decay.The produce was attacked by bacteria, but the peel seemed to slow the decaying process.
  
• Pyramids - Preparing a Site - The Egyptians surveyed the land to make accurate pyramids.   They used a simple plumb line to make sure the verticals were  straight.  
  
  
  An interesting Theory on how water might have been used to build the pyramids.

• Building Great Pyramids & Moving Loads - Moving rocks made pyramid building a challenge. Using ramps made the task easier. A lever was also used to assist in lifting. We found it easier to lift our load when the fulcrum was closer to the "stone".

• Flashcards & Vocab test are free, but we also use "Match it Sentence,"
  "Match It Definitions," & "Which Word?" from the premium activities.
• IEW Vocabulary -    We've been learning 4 news words every week but I wasn't sure if she was retaining the.  She earned a 100 on her 1st comprehensive quiz & even used  colossal in her writing last week.

Spanish

• Duolingo is a fun, free, & fantastic learning tool.
• Much of the learning happens in the form of quizzes, which switch between testing speaking, listening, and writing. 
• The grammar and sentence constructions become progressively difficult as you go along. It keeps reviewing previously learned words,allowing you to progress from basic words all the way through various verb tenses and abstract ideas. 
• We love that we can compare progress with our friends.
