MFW ECC Week 1 - Backyard Habitat & Ecozones

This year we are studying ecology - the study of plants and animals and the environments they live in. Today we took closer look at our "front" yard habitat.  The assignment was to observe a square yard, but the girls chose to mark their sections with a hula hoop.  At first glance they only saw grass and dirt, but I suggested we look closer.  We were amazed at all the things we saw within our hula hoops: grass, leaves, weeds, wood chips, dirt, rocks, ants, snails, and from the literal child - "someone standing in my hula hoop."

"I see someone standing inside my hula hoop."

Of course we had to take time to hula-hoop.  Does this count as PE?

What We Learned:
    • The 7 Continents
    • Ecology is the study of plants and animals and the environements in which they live.
    • A niche is the roles played by plants and animals in their environments
    • The niches we fill in our family and community
