MFW ECC Week 8 - Canada

Another week of Canada fun.  We played hockey for PE. I was shocked that my princesses were pretty much attacking each other with the hockey sticks, as they tried to get the puck.  :) Fun times.   

Our celery experiment turned out great, even though we had a little bit of difficulty removing the xylem.  It is important to make sure you remove all the xylem tubes.  Adding food color is VERY helpful.  During our first observation, only a few hours later, we discovered that we needed to remove more.  The girls enjoyed the straw illustration of how the xylem uses negative pressure (evaporation) to suck up the milk (water from the roots).  

We also completed our North America Geography and a mini report on Canada.  Writing is a struggle for my oldest, but she seems to be improving and not dreading it as much.  

The girls made Inuit Paper dolls for art. We downloaded the paper dolls here.  As you can see, I have "girly girls."  They decided they need these exact outfits when we go to Canada. Not sure if that will happen, but we would love to vacation there some day.   Since the vacation is out of the question, we settled for a movie night watching Anne of Green Gables to close our Canada unit.!

CANADA

Canada is the second largest country. It has 10 provinces and 3 territories. The population is about 32.8 million people. The capital of Canada is Ottawa, and the hugest city is Toronto. Canada is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Pacific Ocean to the west, Arctic Ocean to the north, and the U.S.A. to the south. 

 The Inuit ancestors came thousands of years ago from Siberia. Later Leif Ericson discovered Canada (Newfoundland) in 1,000 A.D. People came from France and Great Britain. They forced the natives off the land. Today they try to share land. Canadians speak English and French.

 It is well known for Niagara Falls, Rocky Mountains, and the CN Tower which was built in 1948. They export fish, wood, and paper. I was shocked that the weather is similar to mine. It is hottest in the summer and coldest in the winter. Since it is cooler in the north, the main sport is hockey. Canada is an amazing place.
