MFW ECC Week 5 - Desert Experiment

How Animals Survive in the Desert
By Katelyn (age 9)

We are learning about animals in the desert and how they survive.  We did an experiment to show how animals keep cool. We placed an ice cube in the sun and one in the shade. The one in the shade didn’t melt as fast.  When an animal is in the sun it will sweat, but an animal gets cooler when it is in the shade.

Next we did an experiment to show how animals burrow underground to keep cool.  When the ice cube in the sun was melting, the ice cube in the burrow only melted a little bit. When an animal is in the sun it is really hot, but an animal in a burrow is cooler.
